(Edmond, Okla.) – University presidents, administrators and law enforcement officers from throughout the country are expected to attend the 2007 National Campus Security Summit, to be held May 30 on the University of Central Oklahoma campus.

The summit is the first of its kind in the U.S. since the tragedy at Virginia Tech in April.

“After the Virginia Tech shootings the spotlight is shining squarely on every college president and senior campus administrator in this country,” said UCO President W. Roger Webb. “This Summit will address all the issues and not just the ones making the headlines.”

Following the Virginia Tech tragedy, Webb testified on campus security before the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security. Webb’s professional career began in law enforcement, where he served with the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety and as Oklahoma Commissioner of Public Safety. He is currently the longest serving university president in Oklahoma.

The one-day Summit is being hosted by UCO, the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism (MIPT), the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).

Highlighted speakers and topics include:

• Former FBI profiler and CNN commentator, Clint Van Zandt, who will address the lessons learned from the Virginia Tech tragedy and offer suggestions on identifying the at risk students;
• Critical Incident Management for Decision Makers;
• The Psychology of Rage;
• Privacy and the Law;
• Law Enforcement and Tactical Issues;
• Communication.

“This is all about practical ideas, affordable ideas that will improve protection while maintaining an environment of openness,” said Donald R. Hamilton, MIPT executive director.

Deadline for registration is May 23.
