Mary Lynn Tate
Principal of The Tate Law Firm
Mary
Lynn Tate is the principal of The
Tate Law Firm and practices civil
litigation from offices located in
Abingdon, Virginia in the areas of
plaintiff's medical negligence,
premises liability, injury,
business, energy and commercial
litigation. Ms. Tate is a Fellow of
the International Academy of Trial
Lawyers (IATL), an honor bestowed on
selected trial lawyers numbering no
more than 500 within the United
States. She is a former president of
the Virginia Trial Lawyers
Association (VTLA) and a permanent
member of the Fourth Circuit Federal
Judicial Conference.
Ms. Tate is on the Board of
Governors of the American
Association for Justice (AAJ). She
is listed in the Bar Register of
Preeminent Lawyers and carries an A
rating in Martindale Hubbell Legal
Directory, a national peer reviewed
rating system. She serves on the
Character and Fitness Committee, a
Bar admissions hearing tribunal for
the Virginia Board of Bar Examiners
and The Appellate Rules Advisory
Committee of The Virginia Supreme
Court. Tate was named a Virginia
Superlawyer and Virginia's Top 25
Women by Law and Politics magazine
in July 2006. In April 2006 she
received VTLA's highest honor, The
Distinguished Service Award.
Ms. Tate is co-director of the
University of Virginia National
College of Trial Advocacy and the
recipient of the Brennan Award from
UVA honoring lawyers who participate
in the education of lawyers. She has
spoken at numerous national programs
and has been a guest speaker in more
than 20 states. Tate practices in
state, federal and appellant courts
and is admitted to practice in the
Virginia Supreme Court, Supreme
Court of the United States, United
State Court of Appeals for the
Fourth Circuit, United States Court
of Appeals for the District of
Columbia Circuit, United States
District Court, Western District of
Virginia, United States District
Court, Eastern District of Virginia;
United States District Court,
Eastern District of Tennessee,
United States Court of Claims,
Interstate Commerce Commission,
Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission, Department of Interior,
and National Labor Relations Board.
In 2000-2002 she served as general
counsel to the Appalachian School of
Law in Grundy, Virginia. Ms. Tate is
a 1976 graduate of the University of
Richmond Law School and received her
undergraduate degree from the
University of Richmond in 1973.
