Steven Healy
Director of Public Safety, Princeton
University
Steven
Healy has been the Director of
Public Safety at Princeton
University (www.princeton.edu/publicsafety)
since January 2003 and is the
Immediate Past President of the
International Association of Campus
Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA)
(www.iaclea.org).
As the director of Public Safety at
Princeton University, he is
responsible for leading the
University’s safety, security, and
law enforcement programs. Chief
Healy manages a 62-person agency and
participates in numerous
University-wide committees with
oversight for campus safety
initiatives.
Steven has been
a member of IACLEA since 1995 and
has served on the Association’s
Government Relations Committee for
the past 10 years. Steven Healy was
the 2006 – 2007 President of IACLEA
and was responsible for leading the
Association’s strategic initiatives
and overseeing actions of the Board
of Directors. As President, Steven
contributed significantly to the
national dialogue about campus
safety and security in the aftermath
of the April 2007 tragic shooting
incident at Virginia Tech University
and other high profile incidents on
campuses. Chief Healy testified
before the U.S. Senate Committee on
Homeland Security and Governmental
Affairs on the topic of “Security
on America’s College Campuses”
in April 2007. He also testified
before the U.S. House of
Representatives Committee on
Education and Labor on the topic of
“Best Practices for Making
College Campuses Safe” on May
15, 2007.
Chief Healy
served on the State of New Jersey’s
Campus Security Task Force that
recently released its report
containing recommendations for
improving security on campuses in
the State (http://www.njhomelandsecurity.gov/pdfs/10-02-07-campus-security.pdf).
He is regular
speaker at national meetings
focusing on best practices on campus
safety and has appeared on numerous
news programs and talk shows
including CNN with Lou Dobbs, ABC
Nightly News, NBC, MSNBC, the Fox
Network, National Public Radio,
and CBC,
the Canadian Broadcasting Company.
He is often quoted in the national
news media on issues related to
campus safety and security. In
December 2007, Steven was named one
of the 25 Most Influential People in
the Security Industry by Security
Magazine. In January 2008, he was
named one of the four education
finalist for the 2007 Campus Safety
Director of the Year Award (http://www.campussafetymagazine.com/Articles/?ArticleID=138).
Steven recently
completed a term on the Department
of Education’s Review Group for the
Higher Education Center for Alcohol,
Other Drug and Violence Prevention
and serves as a subject-matter
expert for the U. S Departments of
Education and Justice. He was part
of the team of nationally recognized
experts presenting the first ever
“comprehensive, collaborative” Clery
Act Training Programs around the
country. Steven chairs a special
IACLEA
Task Force developing a white
paper entitled “The IACLEA Blueprint
for Safer Campuses – Recommendations
for Enhancing Safety and Security on
College and University Campuses,”
which will be unveiled in early
2008.
Prior to
Princeton University, Steven was the
Chief of Police at Wellesley College
in Wellesley, MA. He also served as
Director of Operations at the
Department of Public Safety at
Syracuse University. During his
tenure at Wellesley College, Chief
Healy was the IACLEA North Atlantic
Regional Director and President of
the Massachusetts Association of
Campus Law Enforcement
Administrators.
Steven is a
1984 graduate of the United States
Air Force Academy. He spent 10
years on active duty with the United
States Air Force as a Security
Police Officer, serving at various
bases around the world.
Mr. Healy has
helped develop many strategic plans
for a number of local and national
non-profit agencies, and most
recently served on the Board of
Directors for the Boys and Girls
Club of Trenton/Mercer County.
Steven is from
Baltimore, Maryland and currently
resides in Princeton, NJ with his
family.
